CHAPTER 7

At ten fifteen, Velvet left a message on the recorder saying she’d found Westly, a no-legged bootlegger who pushed himself along on a skate wheeled platform. The raccoon had seen Tiny with another mule on several occasions. They were obviously friends, but Westly figured the other mule for a hustler and kept his nose out of their business. Westly thought he could recognize the mule if he saw him, but otherwise gave a general description. Velvet gave the raccoon my numbers and told him he could earn a hundred dollars if he spotted the mule again. She also said she was staying in the area to see what else she could find.

It wasn’t much to go on. Hustlers were a cagy bunch that had their escape plans mapped out and would be difficult to catch. I put the phone on the hook, turned up my collar, and stepped out into the rain in hopes of catching a cab.

Duke’s office wasn’t a madhouse, but the cleaning crew were certainly in for a long night. Empty coffee cups were used as ashtrays, while others were holding down papers that weren’t crumbled and spilling out an overflowing trash bin.

“You look beat, Duke. Why don’t you get some sleep?”

“Can’t, every available person is on the subway case, and so far, we’ve got nothing. Now all we need is for someone to get wise of why the Russians are looking for a summit meeting or the U.N. shenanigans. Though as long as those in Washington can keep from letting it out, there is enough tension going on worldwide.”

“Have you located the agents yet?”

Duke rubbed his muzzle. “No. As for the Russians, they know about our retaliation policy and want to avoid a war. The thing is, if there was any paperwork on the project, it was all destroyed by the previous regime. They’re working with rumor and speculation.”

“What have the technicians at Fort Detrick come up with? It’s been twenty years since the agent was planted, there has to be some program developed in that time, even a rough outline.”

“You’ve been using your brain. The answer to your question is yes, they can make a few educated guesses, and luckily, they also worked on antibiotics, vaccines, and such at the same time. The only thing is, even if we had something to treat people with, there’s not enough of it.”

I lit a cigarette and smiled. “Do you want to gather up a bunch of females, find a deserted island, and start the world all over again?”

The corners of Duke’s lips curled in a weary grin. “If it means I can get some sleep, why not? Any other ideas in that crazy brain of yours?”

“Did the ballistics get anything on what they found in Tiny’s apartment?”

Duke pulled out a sheet of paper from a coffee stained stack. “A .38 slug from the floor and an ejected cartridge a few feet away. It came from either a new gun or an old one with a new barrel.
